YCC devotees will roadtrip to Mobile to enjoy Shawn Campbell's solo exhibition ACT III: The Act of Acting opening at the Alabama Contemporary Art Center.
Campbell is known for pithy nostalgia embodied by a multimedia approach to sculpture that
masquerades as strange new forms pumped out of the pop culture machine of old. Pulling references
from the silent film era to Pee Wee's Playhouse. Cowboy mythology is anything but a fixed point in the context of Campbell's work. He has created a world within a world offering up campy, playful, and cutting revisions of what we imagine a cowboy to be. A full-scale installation sets the stage for a
subversive reclamation of masculine tropes, old, new, and wildly off-center.
For the opening reception of Campbell's exhibition on Saturday January 18th from 6-9 pm at 75 Beauregard Street, attendees are encouraged to dress in their finest western wear and to participate in Cowboy Karaoke "Rhinestone Cowboy style". Live music by The Bailiwicks will set the scene for a festive exploration of the myth of the American Cowboy, as only Shawn Campbell can bring this phenom to life.
